The government of Gujarat, according to Minister Rushikesh Patel, is "very hopeful" that Tesla, the company led by Elon Musk, will decide to locate a plant in the state. The company has been in informed communication with the government regarding this belief. In response to inquiries, Patel cited news reports indicating that the US-based manufacturer of electric vehicles intended to establish a production facility in Gujarat.

"Elon Musk is considering Gujarat as his first choice. Gujarat has been on his mind ever since he started a survey in India to find a suitable location to set up the plant," said Patel, the state government's spokesperson and minister of health. "The state government is very hopeful of Tesla coming to Gujarat."

According to Patel, there was ongoing discussion with Tesla, which might be the cause of the news that the company was intending to build a facility in the state.

Notably, in June in New York, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was met by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc., the largest electric car manufacturer in the world. Following their meeting, Musk announced his intention to travel to India in 2024.

The Centre is in contact with Tesla to explore establishing a manufacturing facility in India, according to S J Haider, Gujarat's Additional Chief Secretary (Industries and Mines Department), who made this announcement in September.

In order to guarantee that the state plays a major part in the future plans, he had stated that Gujarat will approach the corporation at the suitable moment.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal recently stated that Tesla plans to get components from India for about USD 1.9 billion this year as compared with USD 1 billion the previous year.
